Manhattan Theatre Club has announced a Broadway revival of Clifford Odets’ “Awake and Sing!” as part of its 2026-2027 season.
The production is scheduled to begin performances in December 2026, with an opening night planned for January 2027. Director Tyne Rafaeli will helm the revival, marking her Broadway directing debut.
The cast will be led by Tony Award winner and 2026 Tony Award nominee Danny Burstein as Uncle Morty. Jessica Hecht has been cast as Bessie Berger, while Jeremy Shamos will play Myron Berger. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
Originally premiering on Broadway in 1935, “Awake and Sing!” follows three generations of the Berger family as they navigate life in a crowded Bronx tenement during the Great Depression. The play is widely considered one of Odets’ most significant works and helped establish him as a major voice in American theater.
The drama has remained a popular choice for theater companies for decades and has previously returned to Broadway four times. The most recent Broadway revival, which opened in 2006, won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.

Manhattan Theatre Club Artistic Director Nicki Hunter shared in a statement, “Awake and Sing! is one of the great masterpieces of our canon—it makes you laugh and breaks your heart in one fell swoop.”
She added, “Though Odets wrote this story of a family caught between the life they imagined and the one they were saddled with nearly a century ago, its questions of ambition and sacrifice feel as timely as ever.”
The revival joins a slate of productions already announced for Manhattan Theatre Club’s upcoming Broadway season. Jocelyn Bioh’s “School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play” is set to begin previews on September 8, while David Hare’s new play “Montauk,” starring Laura Linney, is scheduled to premiere in spring 2027.
Off-Broadway, the company will also present the American premiere of Nick Payne’s “The Unbelievers,” with previews beginning October 10.
